Internationally acclaimed expert to lecture on challenges facing families

Les Franklin. You may not have heard of him, but you won't want to miss hearing him. This is the consensus from a group of concerned organizations cosponsoring Franklin's visit to Winnipeg, February 7-9.

On Tuesday, February 8th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, Franklin will offer his insights on the challenges facing families today. Specifically, he will examine the various factors that lead to family stress and tragedies. The issues include substance abuse, suicide, self esteem, communication between parents and children, and goal setting.

Franklin is director of the Governor's Job Trainning Office for the State of Colorado. He is a single father, and intimately knows about the challenges of raising children in a single parent home. He is a motivational speaker and has talked to the country through various talk show circuits, including "The 700 Club." It is here that he has expressed his concerns about the loss of children through self-destructive behaviour.

A noted speaker, Franklin is reconized internationally as the founder of the Shaka Franklin Foundation For Youth that was established in memory of Franklin's son, Shaka, who committed suicide in October, 1990. The foundation was established to help teenage youth make their lives absolute and provide a positive place to go; a center where they can discuss, with professionals, their unanswered questions about gangs, teen pregnancy, suicide, and world violence, as well as to provide information about jobs.

The Foundation's intent is to inform and educate people about and eradicate teen suicide, replace the "solution" of death with positive alternatives for temporary problem teens face each day.

This lecture is being presented through the equal sponsorship participation of the Beth Israel Synangogue, Rosh Synangogue, Shaarey Zedek Synangogue, Board of Jewish Child and Family Community Council, Lisa Cohen Fund at the Jewish Foundation and The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.

Admission is free. All family members are welcomed and encouraged to attend together.
